Certas Energy expands HVO availability with new investment in UK depot network

Certas Energy, the UK’s largest independent fuel distributor, has announced a new seven-figure investment to expand access to hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) across more of its depots nationwide. The move is part of the company’s ongoing effort to support the UK’s transition to lower-carbon fuels.

In the past two months alone, Certas has added HVO supply capabilities to six more depots – bringing the total to 28 across the UK – with further expansions planned in the coming weeks. The latest locations to stock HVO include Whitby, Fort William, Porthmadog, Braintree, and Sheffield. For some areas, such as the Isle of Wight, this marks the first time HVO will be locally available.

The investment will also add around one million litres of renewable diesel to Certas Energy’s national supply network to help meet rising demand from UK businesses seeking lower-emission fuel alternatives. A further one million litres of HVO will be used in Certas’s own fleet operations to reduce its carbon footprint.

HVO, a renewable alternative to standard diesel, can cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% and is compatible with existing diesel engines, making it a viable option for decarbonising transport and machinery quickly.

According to recent industry data from Quantum, UK consumption of HVO reached approximately 700 million litres in 2024, with demand continuing to rise. Certas Energy reports that its own HVO sales have increased by more than 60% over the past year.

Richard Billington, Managing Director of Energy Solutions at Certas Energy, said:
“This latest investment reinforces our long-term commitment to helping UK businesses cut emissions. Expanding the availability of HVO makes the switch to renewable diesel easier and more reliable, especially for fleet operators and commercial users. We’re proud to play our part in supporting local decarbonisation efforts across more communities.”

Certas Energy plans to continue growing its HVO offering as part of a broader strategy to deliver practical, low-carbon energy solutions throughout the UK.
