DP World launches digital port system in Mombasa

DP World has launched its advanced Port Community System (PCS) in Kenya, a move expected to significantly enhance the efficiency and transparency of trade in the region.

The Port of Mombasa, a key gateway for more than a dozen landlocked countries in East and Central Africa, handles a substantial portion of regional imports and exports. Its digital transformation is seen as crucial to strengthening Africa’s trade competitiveness.

Developed in partnership with EMEA Port Logistics and implemented alongside the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and the Government of Kenya, the PCS offers all port users – both public and private – greater cargo visibility, faster clearance and improved operational efficiency.

Although DP World does not operate the Port of Mombasa, the system provides digital tools that streamline trade processes across the board.

Mahmood Albastaki, Chief Operating Officer of Digital Trade Solutions at DP World, said: “Digitisation is no longer optional; it is essential for unlocking the full potential of African trade. By introducing this platform in Kenya, we are connecting Africa’s ports to the digital economy and setting a new benchmark for transparency and integration in the region.”

The PCS offers a comprehensive suite of digital tools for importers, exporters, freight forwarders, transport companies and customs agents, including cargo tracking, gate booking, billing, payments and real-time status updates.

Once fully operational, the system is expected to reduce cargo clearance times by up to 30%, benefiting more than 3,000 port users annually.

For the Kenya Ports Authority, the system will allow smarter gate operations, tighter control of cargo movements and shorter dwell times, reinforcing Mombasa’s position as a leading maritime hub linking East and Central Africa to global markets.

Jack Rono, Director of EMEA Port Logistics, added: “This partnership with DP World is a key step in advancing Kenya’s logistics capabilities. Together, we are creating a connected and transparent ecosystem that benefits every player in the trade chain.”

The initiative complements DP World’s wider digital trade ecosystem across Africa, linking ports on the Indian and Atlantic Oceans with inland logistics hubs.

It also supports Kenya’s Vision 2030 agenda to modernise trade infrastructure and foster a digitally enabled economy.

The PCS builds on DP World’s collaboration with the Government of Kenya through the eCitizen platform, which has digitalised customs and government services to create a more transparent, efficient, and data-driven trade environment.
