The H2Tainer, developed by voestalpine Tubulars and Innofreight, is a 40ft container that can transport up to 420kg of hydrogen, equivalent to around 1,900 kg per double wagon.
Thanks to its modular design, the system can be used both on rail and by truck, without a direct rail connection. This creates a continuous logistics chain for hydrogen, offering greater range and maximum flexibility.
At the heart of the H2Tainer are seamless pipes with the hydrogen-tight premium connection VAhyper, developed and manufactured at voestalpine’s Kindberg site.
The H2Tainer bundles tailor-made services along the entire value chain: from material and product development to production and the finished container and complete logistics solution.
The modular design, non-destructive testing and easy replacement of individual pipes guarantee a service life of more than 20 years if maintenance intervals are observed, the developers claim.
The H2Tainer is currently undergoing the approval process and is expected to be available in summer 2026.
