Andreas Schmid Group expands transshipment capacity in Southern Germany

The freight terminal of the Andreas Schmid Group has been expanded with a new extension.

With this new construction, the Gersthofen-based logistics company is responding to continuously increasing shipment volumes from national and international groupage networks.

  • The extension increases the terminal’s size in Gersthofen from 8,000 m² to 11,500 m² – an increase of 44%.
  • Daily handling capacity rises by 1,000 shipments to 6,000 shipments per day; annually, around 1.5 million shipments can now be handled in Gersthofen.
  • The roof will be equipped with a photovoltaic system, enabling the site’s electricity demand of approximately 400,000 kWh per year to be fully covered.

The Andreas Schmid Group has operated the freight terminal in Gersthofen since 1999.

On the previous 8,000 m², an average of around 5,000 shipments are handled every day.

During seasonal peaks in spring, the terminal reached its capacity limits several times in recent years, requiring the additional use of a second hall.

With the expansion, the Andreas Schmid Group is strengthening not only its capacities but also its role within international networks.

The terminal in Gersthofen serves as the central transshipment hub for all groupage shipments in the company’s IDS region—Germany’s largest groupage network—while also acting as a platform for European linehaul services.
