Netherlands to introduce truck toll

The Netherlands will introduce a truck toll on 1 July 2026. From then, truck owners will pay by the kilometre. This also applies to foreign vehicles, as is already the case in several other European countries. The toll for trucks applies on almost all Dutch motorways and on some provincial and municipal roads.

The Eurovignette for the Netherlands will end on 1 July 2026. According to estimates, more than 725,000 unique foreign trucks use Dutch roads every year.

The toll applies to Dutch and foreign trucks in categories N2 and N3. They have a maximum permissible mass above 3,500kg. Vehicles must be equipped with an on-board unit (OBU) in running condition to meet the toll. The device records the distance travelled.

To obtain an OBU, truck owners must strike a contract with a service provider. The borrower provides the necessary OBU and handles the payment of tolls. The OBU must be activated at all times during the drive in the Netherlands. It is not possible to buy tickets for individual itineraries in the country.

As in Germany and Belgium, the Netherlands has two types of supplier.

EETS system borrowers propose an embedded device (OBU) operating in several countries. In practice, these embedded units are often supplied by fuel card providers.

NedLinq proposes an embedded unit that operates only in the Netherlands. This supplier also offers replacement units in case of failure of an embedded unit.

Many foreign truck owners already possess an OBU and most providers will allow them to extend the service area to the Netherlands. However, the OBUs of national service providers in Germany and Belgium, Toll Collect and Satellic, will not operate in the Netherlands.
