Rotterdam Food Hub expansion to add major cold chain capacity

The Port of Rotterdam Authority, Necron Group and PTP Group have signed an agreement to develop 38 hectares of logistics infrastructure in Europoort for the storage and transhipment of chilled and frozen agrifood products.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority is constructing a quay wall over 500 metres long, along with a breakwater to protect moorings from sea waves and passing vessel traffic. The development forms part of the ongoing expansion of the Rotterdam Food Hub as a dedicated logistics hub for the agrifood sector.

Across four plots, Necron Group will build two cold storage and freezer warehouses — Necron Food Park I & II — in phases, with a combined footprint of approximately 145,000sqm. The facilities target cold-store operators and are designed to meet growing European demand for scalable cold chain solutions.

On the fourth plot along the Calandkanaal, logistics provider PTP Group is developing a 73,000sqm terminal with three berths for deep-sea and inland shipping vessels. The terminal will serve the adjacent cold stores, handle additional cargo flows and enhance multimodal access to the area. PTP will also become a tenant in the Necron warehouses.

“At this strategic location, we bring together logistics, warehousing and infrastructure, enabling our customers to handle their freight more quickly, sustainably and efficiently,” said Boudewijn Siemons, CEO of Port of Rotterdam Authority.
