The expansion, backed in part by EU NextGeneration funds, adds two new 550-metre rail tracks and a dedicated operational yard for rail activities and container storage, bringing the terminal’s total footprint to 42,000 square metres. The project was carried out following the award of the concession by Spanish rail infrastructure manager ADIF in 2024.
Since beginning operations in 2013, the terminal has grown from a single weekly rail service to five regular connections with Barcelona, operated by Synergy, Hutchison Ports BEST’s intermodal rail operator. The connectivity gives businesses in Navarra access to a network of more than 200 international ports.
As part of the expansion, Hutchison Ports BEST is progressively replacing diesel-powered machinery with electric equipment to reduce emissions and support a modal shift towards rail.
Pablo García, director of the Navarra Intermodal Terminal and Synergy, said the investment represented ‘a strong commitment to Navarra for the coming decades’, adding that the terminal would continue supporting regional companies and consolidating logistics infrastructure capable of enhancing their competitiveness in international markets.
The inauguration was attended by the President of the Government of Navarra, María Victoria Chivite Navascués, alongside representatives from ADIF, the Port of Barcelona, and Hutchison Port Holdings Europe.
