The decision, approved at Yang Ming’s 406th board meeting on 16 October 2025, is intended to boost Kuang Ming’s competitiveness and profitability in the bulk shipping market. The new vessels, each with a capacity of between 45,000 and 69,999 deadweight tonnes (DWT), will replace older ships, enhance fuel efficiency, and help lower greenhouse gas emissions in line with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) decarbonisation targets.
Once in service, the Handymax ships will strengthen Kuang Ming’s core chartering activities, enabling the company to transport a variety of cargoes such as coal, grain, fertilisers, agricultural goods, cement and steel.
This order supports Yang Ming’s wider efforts to expand and decarbonise its fleet. The company has also invested in dual-fuel container ships powered by LNG and methanol as part of its broader green transition strategy.
At present, Kuang Ming operates six Panamax bulk carriers, four Handymax bulk carriers, and one Capesize vessel on long-term charter.
According to Yang Ming, the latest investment underscores its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and the continued modernisation of its fleet.
