VTG agrees sale of VTG Rail UK to USS
VTG, Europe’s leading rail freight wagon lessor, has signed an agreement to sell its UK subsidiary, VTG Rail UK, to the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), one of the UK’s largest pension funds.
The transaction is expected to complete in the fourth quarter of 2026 and is not subject to regulatory approvals.
VTG Rail UK is a leading wagon leasing business serving the UK rail freight market and has delivered significant growth over the past four years.
Operating with a high degree of autonomy within the VTG Group, the business has established a strong reputation for innovation, operational excellence and customer service.
Following a strategic review of options for the business, VTG concluded that a sale to USS represented the most attractive outcome for the Group and its stakeholders.
Under USS ownership, VTG Rail UK is expected to continue investing in fleet growth, strengthening customer relationships and supporting the long-term development of the UK rail freight sector.
Alberto Nobis, chief executive officer of VTG Group, said: “Under our ownership, VTG Rail UK has developed into the leading lessor of rail freight wagons in a major European rail freight market. This achievement reflects the commitment of our UK management team and employees, their strong customer relationships and their consistent focus on innovation.”
Dr Mani Herold, chief financial officer of VTG Group, added that the agreement recognises the quality and future potential of the business while enabling VTG to focus capital and management resources on the continued growth of its wider European operations.
